Build understanding before memorising lines.
Learn the position, not just the move
Start by learning how each piece moves, how check restricts your choices and what ends a game. Once those basics are comfortable, work on king safety, piece activity and noticing threats.
Ask three questions
- What did the opponent’s last move change?
- Which pieces are attacked or undefended?
- What happens if my intended move is met by a forcing reply?

The FIDE Handbook contains the official laws for over-the-board chess. A playing platform may apply its own time controls and interface rules. Check those before starting a rated game.
